Make your best impression with the help of these career fair tips:

Tips for a Successful Career Fair

Before the Event

  • Plan Your Time– make sure to check the list of employers so you can get a sense of who you are interested in speaking with. Make sure you know the time and location and plan when to leave your home.
  • Prepare Your Resume and Cover Letter– updating your resume is important to show your experience and qualifications. If you need assistance with your resume, one of the Ontario Employment Services listed below would be pleased to work with you at no cost.
  • Practice– take some time to practice your answers to these common questions from employers:
  1. Can you tell me about yourself?
  2. Why do you want to work for us?
  3. What do you know about our company?
  4. Why did you leave your last job?
  5. Why should we hire you?

Day of the Event

  • Dress For Success– it is important to dress the part as you tour through the booths. Do your clothes convey professionalism? Are you well groomed? You only get one chance for a first impression!
  • Turn Off Your Phone- Not on vibrate! All the way off or on silent. Take full advantage of the opportunity to network with employers and leave your phone in your bag.
  • Be Present- smile and keep eye contact. Be sure to approach employers on your own and not with a friend/family member.
  • Be Prepared- Don’t forget multiple copies of your resume and be prepared for on the spot interviews. Being prepared will give you that confidence boost while speaking with employers.
  • Take Notes- don’t forget a pen and notepad to collect contact information from the company to follow up and write down any questions you may have.
  • Thank you– be sure to thank the employer for their time at the end of your discussion

After the Event

  • Follow Up – Call or email within 2 days to thank the employer for their time at the job fair and inquire about the next steps.

Happy Job Hunting!
